Assistance for Students in Academic Difficulty
When a student is having academic difficulty, the following steps are recommended:
1. Parents/Guardians should talk to teachers first. The teacher has the best understanding of the student's performance. Also, parents may give the teacher information that would be helpful in meeting the student's needs. Steps taken may include:
· The use of regular progress reports
· Finding a peer tutor (this is done through Student Services)
· Extra help provided by teacher
· Other appropriate accommodations
2. Depending on the outcome of the steps taken by the family and teacher, the counselor may also provide assistance. This assistance may include
· A meeting with the student, teachers, and parent/guardian
· Consulting with other teachers to determine whether there is a pattern
· Conferring with the Learning Resource Specialist to determine whether special
accommodations might be needed.
· Follow-up communication with all parties involved
The strategy for assisting a student is the result of cooperation between the teacher, student, parent/guardian, counselor, and -- when warranted -- the Learning Resource Teacher.
Help for Students Who Have Fallen Behind
Students who have fallen behind – perhaps because of an extended absence – can benefit from our help. Counselors will do the leg-work needed to help the student catch up. We'll set up meetings with teachers, and generally help with communication. Students and parents learn what work is due, and teachers learn what they may reasonably expect from the students.
