"We think our friend might have an eating disorder."
"I think my parents are talking about divorce."
"I just need a little privacy right now."
"I just found out my friend was talking about me behind my back."
"I'm really stressed out and I came up here because I didn't want to cry in class."

-- Sometimes Notre Dame students start conversations with a school counselor with statements like these. There is no aspect of our work more important than personal counseling.

Our Philosophy We listen without judging; we avoid giving unwanted advice; we tap into the self-understanding that students have; we explore options

Confidentiality
What we talk about with students stays confidential unless someone may be harmed or abused in some way

What students can expect We'll listen a lot and talk a little. We don't preach or tell you what you should feel. If you need information, we'll help you find it; if you need to blow off steam, we'll listen; if you're worried about a friend in trouble, we'll respect your wishes about how to handle it.
What parents can expect In order to maintain a trusting relationship with students, we must adhere to ethical guidelines about confidentiality. We tell students, however, that we'll have to inform their parents if we have concerns about someone's safety.
