STANDARDIZED TESTING

High school students take standardized tests for three main reasons:

• College Admissions
• College Credit or Placement
• Scholarship Consideration

Notre Dame students generally follow this timeline:

• In the freshman year usually no standardized tests are taken.

• Sophomore Year
  • October: The PLAN test is administered to all NDA Sophomores. The PLAN is essentially a "pre-ACT" for sophomores. Students are tested on reading, English, math and science.  
  • Winter/Spring: A few sophomores take the ACT or the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) for practice.  Parents and students must remember that these are junior level tests.
  • Families should consider the pros and cons of taking such tests as a sophomore. Earlier is not necessarily better. Contact Student Services with questions.

• Junior Year
  • Fall/Winter/Spring: Juniors should take the ACT and/or the SAT. Most juniors take the test for the first time in the winter so that they may take it again in the spring. Juniors will also take the PSAT/NMSQT, administered here at NDA in October. This test acquaints students with the SAT, and a high score may result in entry into the National Merit Scholarship program.
  • Spring: Juniors may take Advanced Placement (AP) tests for college credit.
  • ACT and SAT Prep Classes: There are different classes to help students reach different goals.  NDA wil be hosting an ACT Prep Class! Information regarding January classes will be posted in the near future. 

• Senior Year
  • Fall/Winter: Seniors may take the ACT or SAT again, if they wish, even after having applied to a college.
  • Winter/Spring: If required, seniors should take tests such as the SAT II (also called Subject Tests) that lead to college class placement.  They may also take tests that lead to college credit, such as Advanced Placement (AP) or College Level Examination Program (CLEP).
  • AP test information is available at www.collegeboard.com.  Registration for AP exams occurs at NDA in March. See Mrs. Abler for CLEP test information.
