NDA SERVES
NDA SERVES is considered a school day with attendance taken, but no formal classes are held. It is part of a day (approximately 3 - 4 hours) set aside for our school to learn about the needs of our local community, as we get down in the trenches and help our community wherever we have signed up to work as the hands and feet of Christ! There will not be any bus service to NDA on this day, as students and parents report right to their chosen work sites via parents or student carpooling. Service Day is not a free day; please do not plan appointments or family trips on this day, as invaluable learning takes place. After the service time is ended, the student is free to go home for the afternoon and does not need to return to school. Athletic practices will take place at their usual scheduled times. NDA Serves will take place on April 14, 2010. Click here for a list of sites and descriptions
Parents, YOU are INVITED to serve, too! If you have the day off, or can arrange your work schedule to accommodate a morning of service, please consider signing up to work along-side your student. Parents, you are the first teachers of your children, and you set a powerful example for them as you “walk the talk” and teach by example. Most service sites begin at 9:00 or 10:00 a.m. Also, students can apply these hours to the school’s required service hours; and, there will be no fundraising associated with this day, which allows us to be totally focused on “service in the name of Jesus.”
Over 70 sites have requested assistance from Notre Dame! Service will be provided at area schools, churches, food pantries, diocesan camps, nursing homes, etc. Students can choose their area of interest for work to perform, such as being a reading buddy, stuffing envelopes, doing yard work, cleaning, helping in elementary classrooms, at Paul’s Pantry, the Wildlife Sanctuary, etc. All sites are supervised by an NDA staff and/or parent chaperone.
When do we sign up?
Students sign up on during their lunch hours in early spring. Sign up tables are located outside the Commons near the auditorium. Sites fill up fast, so plan for several options/choices. Parents can sign up through the NDA Parent Volunteer Form.
Who do I talk to if I have questions?
Mrs. Donna Clement, Main Office, is the school contact person. She can be reached at (920) 429-6101.
Why do we serve?
The call to serve others is rooted in the Gospels. Jesus’ life of service, especially to the outcast and the poor, is the example to be followed by us all. As Jesus washed the feet of the disciples, he said, “As I have done, so you must do.” Following the command of Jesus, Notre Dame Academy’s mission statement also challenges us to make a “commitment to service” central to who we are as a school community. On this day we work in solidarity as a school community to serve others.
