Service

“So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead (James 2:17)." Inspired by these words, our job at Notre Dame Academy must stretch beyond the classroom and the chapel (Church). If we are to be faithful followers of Christ, we must be willing to do good works for our Lord and help one another.

There was an average of 11,415 community service hours per year completed by students over the last three years. At NDA, there are five kinds of service:

Parish
All students are strongly encouraged to be active members of their parish. Some areas of involvement are: parish picnics, mailings, babysitting, ushering, serving, reading, singing in church choir, teaching Religious Education, and visiting elderly or shut-ins of that parish. Call your parish for more information.

Hospitals/Nursing Homes, etc.
Students may help with activities that are planned for the area hospitals/nursing homes, etc. Students may consider being a volunteer, visit individuals hospitalized from their parish, visit elderly in their own neighborhood or parish. Contact your area hospitals/nursing homes for more information.

Community Organizations
Students should take note of possible service locations listed. Service opportunities continually are called into NDA, so check with Campus Ministry for suggestions.

School
Any service work that is completed for NDA is classified as school service. For example: working at the Packers food booth, helping tutor, liturgies, ambassadors, office work, sport camps, NDA Tritonfest, campus ministry, etc.

Social Justice
Sophomores are required to complete social justice service. To do this, they must serve the poor and vulnerable, which refers to people deprived of their basic rights and/or equal participation in society. Catholic Social Teaching calls us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first among social concerns. Social justice service is an opportunity for students to live that call to serve the least in our midst.

Rationale: The purpose of the Social Justice service hour requirement is for sophomores to serve the poor and vulnerable, which refers to people deprived of their basic rights and/or equal participation in society. Catholic Social Teaching calls us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first among social concerns. This service requirement is intended to help our students live that call to serve the least in our midst. Because social justice is something that must be learned experimentally, the service hour requirement is a critical component of the Sophomore Theology curriculum and credit for the Morality and Social Justice class is dependent on completing this requirement.

Guidelines:

Sophomores must provide a total of 15 hours of service for the community (outside of NDA).
As part or all of their hours, students must perform direct service (not fundraising via a walk/run or kettle bell ringing, etc) with one of the following approved organizations/programs that emphasize social justice service.

Students must write a reflection on their experience that shows their ability to connect their service with the core aspects of social justice and Catholic Social Teaching. (Specific details and due dates for this requirement will be provided by Sophomore Theology teachers.)
Students will be required to document all hours using the X2Vol System. If students have questions about using this system to record their hours, it is their responsibility to contact Mrs. Kelly Waters.
Students may begin completing their service hours at the end of their Freshman year.
Students may be required to submit progress checks at the discretion of their Sophomore Theology teacher.

Notre Dame de la Baie Academy, the Diocese of Green Bay and the Norbertine Community have a strong commitment to service. All hours should be tracked in the x2Vol online platform and approved by Mrs. Kelly Waters, Campus Minister.

Objectives

To encourage students to experience the true joy of reaching out beyond oneself.
To challenge students to deepen their empathy, sensitivity, and awareness of all people, and to teach them the responsibility to be compassionate toward others.

General Expectations

General Expectations
Students are encouraged to do a minimum of 30 school and/or 30 community service hours per year. Summers may be used to fulfill the expectations in addition to the school year.

Service hours completed for confirmation are acceptable. All service completed for confirmation must be documented and filed with the Director of Campus Ministry at NDA. Students are responsible to pass on this information to NDA.

Service hours completed for sophomore religion classes are acceptable. All service completed for these courses must be documented on x2vol. Teachers will not be responsible for passing information to the Campus Ministry Office.

Service hours performed as part of a club/organization toward membership requirements in that group are acceptable (i.e. Student Government, Outreach Branch of Student Government, National Honor Society, etc.)

Service is only service when there is NO payment, monetary or otherwise.

For service hours to count toward the Service Award (30 hours) and officially counted by the school they must be entered into x2vol.

Service hours can be utilized for applications to the National Honor Society, colleges, scholarships and employment.
