Importance of School Safety Drills

Dear NDA families,

The safety of our students, staff and school is a priority. As part of our state mandate for school safety & security, we are required to have one safety drill per month. Our monthly fire drills usually meet this requirement. Due to trends in school safety incidents, our faculty and staff are regularly trained by the Green Bay Police Department to stay current in these new trends and use techniques to keep our students safe if there were a threat to their safety.

Over the past nine years, Notre Dame Academy staff have been trained on the principles of “Run, Hide, Fight” when there is a situation that threatens the safety of students or staff. “Run, Hide, Fight” was developed through the Department of Homeland Security and its concepts are used as the basis for school safety trainings. “Run, Hide, Fight” empowers students and staff to find safe solutions to their particular circumstances when their safety is threatened until police are on site to neutralize the threat.

Our staff has always engaged our students in informal conversations about these concepts whenever students would ask them about what they would do in a particular circumstance. In the last few years, we have been conducting school safety drills where we formally engage students in a discussion with a staff member on what to do when their safety is threatened. On Wednesday, Jan. 27, at the beginning of each student's Lunch Study Hall in Advisory, we conducted another “Scenario Based Safety Drill.” Students and staff were given a possible scenario that threatens their safety and then they engaged in a discussion as to possible solutions and options to employ under the circumstances. Their responses to these scenarios were reviewed by police officers and administrators. The goal of “Scenario Based Safety Drills” is to empower and educate students on how to remain safe while at school and in public.

It is our goal at NDA to provide a safe and secure environment for our students to succeed. As always, if you or your student has questions, please direct them to a member of the Administration.

May God continue to bless NDA and keep us safe.
