Owen Brummel is Triton of the Week
Owen Brummel is Triton of the Week

The drafting table sitting in Owen Brummel's room has seen a lot of designs over the years.

It has been the place where the Notre Dame Academy senior has created many of his award-winning pieces of art.

The table itself, however, could be viewed as the greatest piece of art Brummel owns.

The relic was passed down to him from his paternal grandfather, who bought the drafting table as his first purchase when he immigrated to the United States from Germany as a young architect looking to start a business in what was a new world to him.

"I just think that's really special that I get to carry on that legacy with that same drafting table, doing all of my sketches and all of my work on the same table," Brummel said.

The latest honor Brummel has earned for his work is being named one of the Artists to Watch in 2020 by Fox Cities Magazine.

For his efforts, Brummel is the Triton of the Week for the week of Jan. 13, 2020.

"I started drawing at a pretty young age, like younger than usual, because my grandpa and dad are both architects and pretty talented in drawing and just art," Brummel said. "I would just see them work at their drafting tables and I'd be inspired to do the same."

Brummel's talents are no secret to the NDA community. As a junior, he was named Mr. NDA at the Academy Awards after performing a moving guitar solo set to a time-lapse video of him sketching a drawing of his late grandparents.

"I think what we see on the outside is one-third of what he is," German Teacher Jennie Laaksonen said. "He's just a cool kid.

"It's clear that he is very well known around school and people think he's quite popular, but he's really not that persona all the time. He's just one of the most humble kids. He's very talented, driven, a bit shy, but truly one of the coolest people I have had the chance to meet."

At school, Brummel is a member of German Club, Environmental Club and helped the boys cross country team finish as the WIAA Division 2 state runner-up in November.

His volunteer efforts entail being an art therapist and swim instructor at the Cerebral Palsy Center and painting a mural at St. John's Homeless Shelter.

Brummel is an IB Visual Arts student and wants to pursue a career involving the arts or graphic design.

"I couldn't ask for better teachers in my IB curriculum," said Brummel, who was named the Best Young Artist at Art Street last year.

"Everyone is so helpful, and I feel like I've learned so much from these unique teachers through IB. It taught me to be self-reflective and to question everything that I know and do."
