A photo of Greg Engebos and Premontre track and field coach Dick Hietpas from 1969

The Premontre track and field team enjoyed an outstanding season in 1969. It was a year of firsts. It was the first time Premontre had won a sanctioned WISAA state title and it was the first time a Catholic school outside the Greater Milwaukee area had won a WISAA state title in track and field.

It all began with an excellent regular season. The team was undefeated in all of its dual and multi-school meets. It won the conference relay title and the conference team title. During their pursuit of the conference titles, the competing athletes set school records on the track in the 100, 220, 440, mile relay and the 880 relay. In field events, school records were set in the long jump (broad jump), pole vault and shot put. The athletes also set conference records in the 100, 220, 440, pole vault, mile relay, and the 880 relay. These amazing performances set the stage for the Cadets' march to the WISAA state meet.

On paper the team was seeded to score 50 points with anticipated first-place finishes in five events. However, if Premontre was able capture first place in five events, they would still need another 44-50 points from the remaining athletes in order to win the title. The Cadets won all five of the races that they were projected to to win and set meet records in those events. The team was filled with amazing student-athletes who had a ton of ability and even more heart and the remaining athletes performed beyond all expectations.

Premontre scored an additional 54 points with personal bests in the discus, 100 and 220. The meet came down to the last event, the 880 relay.  The Cadets were in the lead by two points. If the relay team finished within two places of Milwaukee Pius, it would win the title. Premontre coach Dick Hietpas knew the meet could be won if the team had average handoffs. The runners did better than that. They had perfect handoffs and set a state meet record! What a finish to a fairy tale season! It was a total best effort by all of the athletes which ended in a state title.

Hats off to all of the 1969 Premontre track and field student-athletes.  Every one of you made the student body, the faculty, Premontre High School and Central Catholic High School proud.
