May named NDA girls tennis coach

Sommer May has been named the head coach of Notre Dame Academy's girls tennis team.

The 2000 NDA alumna is taking over as coach for a program she won two WISAA state singles title for when Shane Lagerman was her coach.

"This is a great opportunity for Sommer to take over a program that has had a lot of success and to bring her passion for the sport to NDA," NDA Athletic Director Matt Koenig said. "She understands the tradition and values of Notre Dame Academy. She will be able to bring her knowledge and experience of coaching at the Division I level to the athletes who want to get better at tennis and those who have aspirations of playing at the next level."

May most recently was the head coach of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women's tennis team in addition to serving as a volunteer coach for the Buddy Up Tennis Program.

After playing collegiately at Marquette University, May earned the No. 1 ranking in Wisconsin in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Her resume includes USTA championship titles won at the Greater Milwaukee Open, Midwest Indoor Championship and the Wisconsin Adult Open.

May resides in De Pere with her husband, Jon, and their twins, Kennedy and Charles, who are incoming freshmen at NDA.

She is looking forward to coaching at the prep level for her alma mater.

"During our contact days this summer, the team was extremely positive and eager to prepare for the season," May said. "Although there's a lot of uncertainty going into the 2020 fall season, it's great to be back on the Triton tennis courts."
